What difference does attendance make?

Hours missed

Attendance has a big impact on the results that a student can achieve and every lesson missed matters. Programmes of study have been designed by our specialist teachers to maximise every hour of learning and so missed lessons really do mean missed content. (One week of missed lessons at college is equal to 13.5 hours of missed teaching).

Impact on attainment

Recent national research into attendance in a Post 16 setting has found that:

Student attendance
95%+Almost 25% of students will achieve higher than their minimum target grade (MTG)
85%-95%Almost 20% of students will achieve lower than their MTG
Less than 85%Approximately 50% of students will achieve lower than their MTG
In Year 13 this equates to over 60 hours of missed teaching over the year. For Year 12 students this equates to 70 hours of missed teaching.

Challenging content

Studying for Level 3 qualifications is challenging. There is a lot of content to learn, know and retain. Lessons have been designed to build in regular testing and recall of taught subject knowledge. There is also a lot of importance placed on students using knowledge gained from their independent learning and applying it in lessons. This can only be directed and then checked during lesson activities.

Support

We regularly review and monitor attendance and would welcome your continued support in ensuring that attendance in college remains high.

If you would like to discuss any attendance concerns that you may have, please contact a member of the Progress Tutor team who would be happy to discuss any issues with you.
